Shop opening hours on holidays 2027
Act No. 223/2016 Coll. on retail opening hours bans retail sales on these holidays:
- 1 Jan (Friday), 29 Mar (Easter Monday), 8 May, 28 Sep, 28 Oct, 25 Dec and 26 Dec,
- 24 Dec (Christmas Eve) from 12:00.
On the other holidays, i.e. Good Friday 26 March, 1 May, 5 July, 6 July and 17 November, the law does not restrict sales. The ban does not apply, for example, to shops with a sales area of up to 200 m², petrol stations, pharmacies, shops at airports, railway and bus stations, and in healthcare facilities. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March in 2027, so Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March.

What it means for pay and leave
- Hourly pay: employees paid by the hour earn more in months with more working days. April, June, August and December have the most (22), January, February, July and October the fewest (20).
- Holidays: an employee who did not work because a holiday fell on their usual working day is entitled to wage compensation at average earnings for the pay lost due to the holiday (Section 115(3) of the Labour Code). This typically concerns employees paid by the hour; a monthly salary is not reduced for a holiday, so no pay is lost. Work on a holiday is compensated by time off in lieu or, by agreement, a premium of at least average earnings (Section 115(1) and (2)).
- Annual leave: entitlement is calculated in hours according to weekly working time. Work it out in our annual leave calculator.
Working days between two dates and the working-time fund for your own working hours can be calculated in our work calendar, which also covers 2027.
