How long does maternity leave last?
Maternity leave — the support period for the maternity benefit (PPM) — lasts 28 weeks for one child and 37 weeks for twins or more. A woman usually starts 8 to 6 weeks before the expected due date and chooses the exact day herself. If she does not choose, it starts automatically at the beginning of the sixth week before the due date.
Eligibility for PPM
- • Participation in sickness insurance for at least 270 calendar days in the last two years before the start of PPM.
- • Ongoing sickness-insurance participation at the start (for employees), or the protection period.
- • The self-employed must additionally have voluntary sickness insurance for at least 180 days in the last year.
How much is PPM?
PPM is 70% of the reduced daily assessment base per calendar day. It is usually significantly higher than the parental allowance that follows.
