Table of Contents
The year 2026 brings two key changes to employee benefits: increased annual limits for tax and contribution exemptions, and a definitive distinction between salary and benefits.
Update as of 26 October 2026: from 1 January 2027 the rules change again under Act No. 180/2026 Coll.: for sport, culture, educational and recreational facilities, a company nursery and books the shared half-average-wage limit ends, holidays and trips get a separate CZK 20,000 annual limit, and preventive healthcare under Annex 4 is not treated as income. The health-benefit limit for 2027 is CZK 51,663. See Payroll and employer changes in 2027. A complete overview of tax-exempt benefits for 2027 is in Employee benefits 2027. This article describes the rules in force in 2026.
End of Replacing Salary with Benefits (from January 1, 2026)
New legislation clearly states that an exempt benefit must be:
- Non-monetary (provided in kind)
- Provided on top of salary (not instead of part of it)
It is still possible to pay part of remuneration in kind, but it will be treated as taxable salary including social and health insurance contributions. The practice of replacing part of agreed salary with "benefits" to save on contributions is now definitively prohibited.
Example: Agreed salary CZK 40,000 → CZK 38,000 in cash + CZK 2,000 in cafeteria points. The CZK 2,000 is not a benefit but salary in kind → taxed with full contributions.
Exemption Limits Tied to Average Wage (2026)
The average wage for 2026 is CZK 48,967. Limits are derived from it:
Leisure Benefits – limit CZK 24,483.50/year
Includes: sports, culture, recreation, education, cafeteria, passes, books, vacation vouchers. Popular providers include Pluxee (formerly Sodexo) and Edenred.
Example: Cafeteria CZK 20,000 + tickets CZK 6,000 = CZK 26,000 → CZK 24,483.50 exempt, CZK 1,516.50 must be taxed.
Health Benefits – limit CZK 48,967/year
Includes: health, medical and hygiene services and goods, prescription medical devices.
Example: Dental care CZK 22,000 + physiotherapy CZK 25,000 = CZK 47,000 → fully exempt.
For comparison with 2025: leisure up to CZK 23,278, health up to CZK 46,557.
Meals – Vouchers and Meal Allowance
Meal contributions are exempt up to 70% of the upper meal allowance limit for business trips of 5–12 hours. For 2026, the limit is CZK 129.50/shift (70% of CZK 185).
Employers can choose between meal vouchers/cards (e.g. Pluxee Meals) and a meal allowance (cash contribution in salary). Both have the same tax limit.
Pension and Life Insurance
Employer contributions to supplementary pension insurance, life insurance, long-term investment products (DIP) and long-term care are exempt up to a combined limit of CZK 50,000/year. More information on pension savings is available at the Czech National Bank.
Example: Pension CZK 30,000 + life insurance CZK 20,000 = CZK 50,000 → fully tax-free.
ESOP – Employee Stock Options (New in 2026)
Since April 1, 2025, an optional deferral of taxation of employee shares and options applies – if the employer notifies the tax office, taxation occurs only upon later realization (Act No. 84/2025 Coll.). From January 1, 2026, this is complemented by the so-called qualified ESOP for small and medium companies (turnover up to CZK 2.5 billion) under a "no tax before cash" regime: income is taxed only upon sale of the shares and is not subject to social or health insurance contributions. For startups and tech companies, this is a significant improvement in compensation attractiveness.
Summary Table of 2026 Limits
Leisure benefits: CZK 24,483.50/year (sports, culture, recreation, education)
Health benefits: CZK 48,967/year (health services, medical devices)
Meals: CZK 129.50/shift (vouchers or allowance)
Pension/Life/DIP: CZK 50,000/year (combined limit)
ESOP: under qualified ESOP, taxation only upon sale of shares
Practical Recommendations
1. Update your internal benefits policy – clearly define "benefit vs. salary"
2. Set annual stop-limits in cafeteria systems and monitor usage
3. Adjust meal voucher/allowance values to CZK 129.50/shift
4. For pension savings, utilize the full CZK 50,000 limit
5. Consider introducing an ESOP program for key employees
6. Consult with a payroll advisor on the optimal benefits mix
Legal basis: Section 6(9) of Act No. 586/1992 Coll., on Income Tax, as effective from January 1, 2026.
